Broome FESA fire

This shot was taken across the bay from Eco Beach Resort looking towards Broome. The fire was started by FESA and if that had happened in Victoria, I reckon they would be looking to prosecute someone….so what is happening here….how is it that FESA can get away with this wanton destruction of the North West???????????

  1. Hi Mark,
As you probably know burning off is a practice that is done every year in the top end of Australia. I was watching ABC recently and there are a group of Aboriginal rangers in Arnhem Land that are doing a study with CSIRO to determine the Carbon footprint of traditional burning.
Preliminary studies show that their burning is far more beneficial in many ways, than not doing it.
Sounds & looks weird but so far that’s the consensus.
    Enjoying your posts!

    • I for one do not agree with stuffing around with nature especially up there in the wilderness.

Who knows what the landscape would look like if they let it grow a bit with hammering it every year???

      Thanks for the comments Tim.

  2. Looks like quite a fire going there Mark. Don’t worry we have plenty of control burns go out of control here in Vic too… Wilsons prom NP just down the road is a classic example… every few years it seems to happen. I think it was in 2005 that a ‘controlled’ burn got out of control and burnt about 1/3 of the park and it had to be closed for Easter, private and local businesses there and nearby towns subsequently lost millions of dollars from lost tourism revenue… ooops/ho-hum !

  3. Geeze fellas. Controlled burns in the north should have happened months ago! In May-June. Not now it’s way too hot and dry up there during this time of year!

  4. Guys, I’m the last to believe the media, but there’s no mention in any of the stuff I have read today that it was a burn-off gone wrong. Mark, you know something we don’t?

  5. The not so in control burns. The Wilsons Prom one that Tony was talking about was a friggin disgrace. I remember seeing the forecast for the day in question and remember thinking that it was going to be windy, obviously the DSE were not as observant.
